The tradition of class rings originated with the West Point Class of 1835. Prior to1869, cadets designed their own rings. A ring committee was established in 1869 to attempt to bring some uniformity to the design of the rings. The standard for the basic design of the ring was to have the Academy Crest on one side of the ring with the Class Crest on the other side. The top of the ring has a cadet selected stone with the words "West Point" molded above the stone and the class year molded below.
This second picture of the giant replica shows the Class of 2009 Crest Side of the ring as viewed from the Crest Hall Balcony
Steven selected a black star sapphire stone with two small diamonds separating "West Point" from "2009" (replacing the stars present in the replica). He also selected an antique gold finish for the ring. |
